Breve descriptor:
El curso aborda los tres períodos de presencia hispana en los territorios que actualmente conforman los EE.UU.: Español, Mejicano, Anglo. En el primero de ellos se estudiarán los condicionantes que originaron las primeras expediciones y el posterior interés (s. XVIII) de aquellos territorios para la Corona Española; el estudio del Periodo Mejicano se centrará fundamentalmente en las políticas gubernamentales durante las décadas de soberanía mejicana. Finalmente se abordarán estudios de tipo histórico, sociológico, cultural, político, y económico, de las distintas minorías hispanas (Méjico-americanos, portorriqueños, cubanos, otros) en los actuales Estados Unidos. El objetivo central es conocer la importancia que España tuvo históricamente en los territorios al norte del Río Grande y trazar las raíces de los diferentes grupos hispanos presentes en la sociedad estadounidense contemporánea enfatizando su actual importancia en todos los órdenes sociales. Con tal fin se utilizarán una gran variedad de documentación gráfica (vídeos) y textos de carácter verbal y no verbal. Se prestará especial atención a las manifestaciones sociales, culturales, y artísticas de los diferentes grupos hispanos actuales.
Se espera contar con distintos especialistas e invitados a lo largo del curso.
The course deals with the three periods of Hispanic presence in the territories that currently make up the U.S.: Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo. In the first one, the course will study the determining factors that originated the first expeditions and the subsequent interest (18th century) of those territories for the Spanish Crown; the study of the Mexican Period will focus mainly on the governmental policies during the decades of Mexican sovereignty. Finally, historical, sociological, cultural, political and economic studies of the different Hispanic minorities (Mexican-Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, others) in the present United States will be addressed. The central objective is to know the historical importance that Spain had in the territories north of the Rio Grande River and to trace the roots of the different Hispanic groups present in contemporary American society, emphasizing their current importance in all social orders. To this end, a wide variety of graphic documentation (videos) and verbal and non-verbal texts will be used. Special attention will be given to the social, cultural, and artistic manifestations of the different Hispanic groups of today.
It is expected that different specialists and guests will be invited throughout the course.

Objetivos
El objetivo central es conocer la importancia que España tuvo históricamente en los territorios al norte del Río Grande y trazar las raíces de los diferentes grupos hispanos presentes en la sociedad estadounidense contemporánea enfatizando su actual importancia en todos los órdenes sociales. Con tal fin se utilizarán una gran variedad de documentación gráfica (vídeos) y textos de carácter verbal y no verbal. Se prestará especial atención a las manifestaciones sociales, culturales, y artísticas de los diferentes grupos hispanos actuales.
También se estudiará y analizará la importancia de los distintos grupos de origen hispano en la actual configuración política y socieconómica de los Estados Unidos en el siglo XXI así como el proceso histórico desde la anexión de territorios tras la firma del Tratado de Guadalupe-Hidalgo.
The main objective is to learn about the historical importance of Spain in the territories north of the Rio Grande River and to trace the roots of the different Hispanic groups present in contemporary American society, emphasizing their current importance in all social orders. To this end, a wide variety of graphic documentation (videos) and verbal and non-verbal texts will be used. Special attention will be given to the social, cultural, and artistic manifestations of the different Hispanic groups of today.
The importance of the different groups of Hispanic origin in the current political and socioeconomic configuration of the United States in the 21st century will also be studied and analyzed, as well as the historical process since the annexation of territories after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.

Evaluación
Sistema de evaluación: Participación en clase (20%), Presentaciones públicas (40%), realización de trabajo (40%).
Tipos de evaluación:
Evaluación continua: se evaluará la participación activa del estudiante tanto en las presentaciones y comentarios críticos de las lecturas indicadas para cada sesión como la intervención en los debates y otras actividades organizadas.
Evaluación final: presentación de un trabajo y examen final (100%).
Criterios de evaluación:
-Participación activa en los debates del aula.
-Capacidad de observación y análisis.
-Conocimiento y correcto uso de la terminología y de los procesos fundamentales contenidos en el temario y trabajados a lo largo del curso.
-Capacidad de plantear y desarrollar una argumentación de manera clara, ordenada, coherente y precisa. En el caso de caso de los trabajos escritos, se seguirán las convenciones de la escritura de ensayos académicos
Evaluación Final. Si el alumno por motivos excepcionales no participa en la evaluación continuada, tendrá opción a un examen final (2 horas): 100%.

Continuous evaluation: the active participation of the student will be evaluated both in the presentations and critical comments of the readings indicated for each session and the intervention in the debates and other organized activities.
Final evaluation: presentation of a paper and final exam (100%).

-Ability of observation and analysis.
-Knowledge and correct use of the terminology and the fundamental processes contained in the syllabus and worked throughout the course.
-Ability to present and develop an argument in a clear, orderly, coherent and precise manner. In the case of written papers, the conventions of academic essay writing will be followed.
