(Módulo de Literatura en Lengua Inglesa). [Literaturas Postcoloniales en Lengua Inglesa].
El alumno deberá ser capaz de identificar y analizar distintos elementos de la teoría postcolonial y su evolución, explicar cómo la experiencia postcolonial ha afectado a las literaturas producidas en dicho contexto y analizar cómo las obras literarias reaccionan a una ideología o discurso colonial.

The student will be able to identify and analyze the different elements that make up postcolonial theory and its development, explain how postcolonial experience has shaped the literatures produced in such context and analyze how literary works react to a certain ideology or colonial discourse.

ACTIVIDADES DOCENTES

Clases teóricas
La profesora presentará las distintas unidades del temario a los estudiantes. Asimismo, hará una introducción y proporcionará guías de lectura para las lecturas obligatorias.

The lecturer will introduce the different units of the syllabus. In addition, she will provide and introduction to compulsory readings and she will offer reading guides.
Clases prácticas
Los estudiantes deberán preparar y llevar leídos a clase semanalmente los textos críticos y literarios. Tras la presentación por parte de la profesora, deberán exponer sus propias conclusiones acerca de los mismos, ser capaces de contestar a preguntas concretas y participar en un debate activo.

The students are required to prepare their weekly readings (theory and literature). After the lecturer's presentation, they should provide their own conclusions about the texts, be able to answer specific questions and participate in an active debate.
Presentaciones
Los estudiantes deberán realizar en grupos un trabajo de máximo 3 personas una presentación sobre una de las obras de literatura propuestas en clase. Su presentación hará especial hincapié en los aspectos tratados en las clases teóricas (contexto postcolonial, temas, estrategias textuales, etc.). Se valorará positivamente que los estudiantes utilicen y entablen un diálogo con las lecturas críticas y teóricas abordadas en clase.

The students should present in groups (max. 3 people) the result of their research about one of the literature readings included on the reading list. Their presentation should focus on the different topics studied during the theory lessons (postcolonial context, themes, textual strategies, etc.). The creative use of critical and theoretical readings would be positively regarded.

El ámbito de los estudios postcoloniales ocupa un espacio indisciplinar que parte de la noción de que el poder y la dominación imperiales han sido, y continúan siendo, unas fuerzas económicas, sociales y culturales enormemente influyentes en la modernidad en general. La asignatura se centra en la producción literaria y cultural que surge bajo el dominio colonial y en los años posteriores en diferentes espacios, desde el Caribe, a Oriente Medio pasando por América Latina, y también en textos escritos por minorías reprimidas o de la diáspora. Además, el temario incluye una aproximación teórdica a los estudios de desarrollo y a los estudios comparativos etnoraciales que sirvan para analizar el orden global contemporáneo.

The area of Postcolonial studies is an interdisciplinary field that starts from the assumption that imperial power and domination have been, and continue to be in its newer forms, profoundly influential economic, social and cultural forces in modernity at large. The course focuses on the literary and cultural production that has emerged under colonial rule and its aftermath in different locations, from the Caribbean to the Middle East to Latin America, and also on texts written by diasporic and repressed minorities. Furthermore, the syllabus includes a theoretical approach to development studies and comparative ethno-racial studies for current considerations about the contemporary global order.

Se espera que el alumno tenga un nivel de lengua inglesa alto para que pueda seguir las clases, leer los textos asignados, participar activamente en los debates y realizar presentaciones orales y exámenes en esta lengua.

The student should demonstrate a high level of English language to follow the lessons, read the required texts, show an active participation on debates and complete oral presentations and exams in this language.

Objetivos

Esta asignatura tiene por objetivo general fomentar el pensamiento crítico de los estudiantes y ampliar sus conocimientos de literatura, incorporando al aula autores tradicionalmente considerados "periféricos". Los estudiantes podrán leer textos (ensayo, poesía, novela y relato breve) de muy diversa procedencia emplazados en los distintos contextos coloniales, postcoloniales e imperialistas, para estudiar cómo estos autores han reaccionado o "resistido" al discurso colonial. Así, la asignatura explorará diversos ejes temáticos para abordar a los distintos autores (género, cuerpo, etnia, diáspora, orientalismo, exotismo, etc.). Los alumnos también se familiarizarán con las principales teorías postcoloniales con el fin de poder establecer paralelismos y diferencias entre distintos autores y contextos. Asimismo, el estudiante recibirá las herramientas críticas y teóricas necesarias para llevar a cabo una lectura postcolonial de otras obras literarias, independientmente del contexto y periodo histórico en que fueron escritas.

This subject aims at promoting the students' critical thought as well as expanding their literary knowledge, incorporating authors who have been traditionally considered "marginal"to the lessons. The students would read texts (essays, poetry, novels, short stories) from different backgrounds and colonial contexts, whether postcolonial or imperial, in order to study how these authors have reacted or "resisted" colonial discourse. Thus, the subject will explore different thematic axis (gender, body, race, diaspora, Orientalism, exoticism, etc.) to approach the different authors . The students will also become familiar with the main postcolonial theories so they can stablish parallelisms and differences between different authors and contexts. Furthermore, the students will acquire the required critical and theoretical tools which to pursue a postcolonial reading of different literary works, regardless of the context and the moment of history in which they were written.
