SINOPSIS
COMPETENCIAS
Generales
CG 2 - Conocimiento de las disciplinas del campo de la lengua inglesa.
CG 6 - Capacidad para negociar, hacerse entender, redactar informes y documentos, manejar información masiva y compleja y utilizar herramientas informáticas y presentar en público productos, ideas e informes, todo ello en lengua inglesa.
CG 7 - Capacidad de orientar interdisciplinarmente las competencias ya mencionadas, con el objeto de que resulten extrapolables a una variedad de ámbitos profesionales en los que éstas son cada vez más valoradas (véase la relación de las profesiones para las que capacita el título).
CG 8 - Capacidad para comprender e integrar información procedente de diversas fuentes, y encuadrarla en distintas perspectivas teóricas.
CG 9 - Capacidad para acometer, con un alto grado de autonomía, estudios de posgrado u otros estudios de nivel similar en el ámbito profesional.

Específicas
CE 22: El alumno será capaz de utilizar diversas herramientas que se emplean para trabajar en los campos de la lingüística inglesa aplicada indicados en la CE 21, y para emprender estudios de posgrado especializados en alguno de estos campos.
ACTIVIDADES DOCENTES
Clases teóricas
The theoretical sessions will include presentations given by the professor, as well as summaries, reviews and discussion of the contents of texts read by the students.

In the practical sessions, students will carry out exercises that reinforce the knowledge acquired and will become familiar with the management of resources and tools for the different phases of a research project.

Introduction to the phases, methods and techniques used in research in English linguistics.

Objetivos
Al finalizar el curso se pretende que el estudiante conozca las diferentes fases de un trabajo de investigación, conozca los métodos y técnicas principales para cada una de dichas fases, sea capaz de entender y evaluar la metodología de trabajos existentes, y pueda acometer el diseño de un trabajo propio de investigación siguiendo una metodología científica.
At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the different phases of a research project and the main methods and techniques used in each of these phases, will be able to understand and evaluate the methodology of existing works and will be able to undertake the design of their own research project following a scientific methodology.

Planificación del trabajo de investigación: Obtención de ideas; formulación de hipótesis; revisión de la bibliografía; marco teórico; recopilación y obtención de datos; análisis cuantitativos y cualitativos. Revisión de recursos y herramientas generales para la investigación: Fuentes documentales y bibliográficas. Descripción y construcción de variables: Tipos y funciones. Recopilación de datos. Tipos de datos. Muestra y población. Análisis cualitativos y cuantitativos. Ventajas y desventajas. Análisis combinados. Análisis cuantitativos. Estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Conceptos básicos de estadística descriptiva: frecuencias; medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión. La distribución normal. Conceptos básicos de estadística inferencial: estimación e inferencia. Comparación de muestras. Comprobación de hipótesis y significación estadística. Métodos paramétricos y no-paramétricos. Comparación de medias. Comparación de proporciones. Correlación. Predicción y regresión.
Planning a research project: formulating ideas; hypothesis formulation; literature review; theoretical framework; collection and collection of data; quantitative and qualitative analysis. Review of general research tools and resources: bibliographic sources. Variable description and design: Types and functions. Data gathering. Type of data. Sample and population. Qualitative and quantitative analysis. Advantages and disadvantages. Combined analysis. Quantitative analysis. Descriptive and inferential statistics. Evaluación
La evaluación será continuada a lo largo del curso y se realizará una prueba final. Se valorará la participación en clase, la cooperación en grupo, la realización puntual de las diversas tareas, la presentación de resultados de ejercicios prácticos y la calidad de los ejercicios y proyectos presentados.
Assessment will have a highly practical character, including, in addition to the results obtained in the tests that the instructor o the instructor can carry out (30%), the realization of activities and practical works related to the knowledge purchased and/or the tools used (75%).
Assessment will be continued throughout the course and a final test will be carried out. Class participation, group cooperation, task completion, that presentation of results of practical exercises and the quality of the exercises and projects presented will be valued.
